Famiglia nobilissima, originaria di Spagna, portata nel Napoletano nel secolo XVII da Giovan-Crisostomo de Vergas che, investito d'importanti uffici di magistratura, raggiunse l'alto grado di presidente del S. R. C. In un diploma rilasciato il 15 maggio 1660 dal Re Filippo IV al suddetto Giovan-Cisostomo venivano riconosciuti a questo i titioli di marchese della Villa di S. Vincenzo, di conte del Porto e di Vergel, di signore di Urgas e Varguillos, e d'idalgo, infanzone e nobile di Aragona, Castiglia e Leone, nonchè il grandato di Spagna, ed il diritto ereditario agli ordini di Calatrara, di S. Giacomo e di Alcantara; diploma che fu poi confermato dall'Imperatore Carlo VI nel 1733. Il ramo napoletano fu ricevuto più volte per giustizia nell'Ordine di Malta a cominciare dal 1662, fu insignito del titolo di duca nel 1732, e del titolo di Marchese di Vatolla nel 1788, e finalmente ereditò, per estinzione della famiglia
