La famiglia si dice che discenda dalla gens Cassia romana. Ovidio, da alcuni ritenuto figlio del siro Eliodoro, rettore a Roma e segretario dell'imperatore Adriano, fu generale romano e 165 anni dopo Cristo vinse i Parti, conquistò e distrusse Clesifonte e Seleucia; nel 175 si ribellò facendosi acclamare imperatore ma dopo alcuni mesi fu ucciso dai suoi soldati. Giovanni, giureconsulto romano console di Svezia e Norvegia, in seguito al matrimonio con la nobile Carolina Marianecci acquistò beni in Civitalavinia ed ospitò nel suo palazzo il sommo pontefice Gregorio XVI, avvenimento ricordato con una lapide. Giovanni morì il 6 settembre 1841 e fu inumato nella chiesa del SS. Crocifisso in Nemi. Suo figlio Anchise nel 1843 fu ammesso fra i nobili di Città della Pieve. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco ufficiale col titolo di nobile di Città della Pieve.
