On trouve cette famille en Périgord dans la seconde moitié du XVème siècle où elle a produit des hommes illustres dans la chaire, les sciences et le barreau. On serait porté à confirmer cette affirmation quand on examine les armoiries de cette maison et les alliances nobles qu’elle a eu pendant plusieurs siècles. Au nom de cette famille on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l’on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et heraldique, l’assurance d’une valeur historique de patrimoine, de noblesse et de valeur. Ces armes sont ainsi inscrites dans L’Armorial Général de France. Elle y a été maintenue dans sa noblesse d'extraction par l'intendant Pellot, 1667, et elle figure sur les rôles des privilégiés de la sénéchaussée de Pèrigueux, en 1692. L'infanterie de marine, lors de l'expédition de Chine de 1861, était commandée par le général de Vassoignes.
