Antiga e muito nobre família piemontesa, de clara e ancestral virtude, conhecida como Vasto ou del Vasto, espalhou-se ao longo dos séculos em vários locais da Itália e do mundo. De ascendência alerâmica e origens francas, ela foi dona de muitos lugares, não só no Piemonte, especialmente nos territórios entre Saluzzo e Alexandria, mas também no oeste da Ligúria. Na verdade, seus domínios incluíam a Marca di Savona e parte do Langhe e os condados de Acqui e Bredulo. Com o casamento de Adelasia del Vasto com o normando Ruggero d'Altavilla, a família estendeu seu domínio a alguns feudos sicilianos importantes e, por um curto período, ao Reino de Jerusalém.
