Questa famiglia trae la sua origine da Anselmo, quartogenito di Bonifacio Marchese di Savoia, del Vastolo, di Gravesana e di Ceva. Nella divisione dell'eredità paterna ebbe Anselmo il Marchesato di Ceva, dal quale presero nome i suoi discendenti. Tutti gli autori che parlano di questa famiglia vogliono che il detto Bonifacio discendesse da Aleramo, figliuolo del Conte di Aquisgrana e nipote del Duce di Sassonia, e che Aleramo, rimasto orfano, e perduti i suoi stati, entrato da valletto nella Corte di Ottone I Imperatore di Alemagna, invaghitosi di Adelasia, figliuola di Ottone, fugge con quella dalla casa imperiale e vissero molti anni nascosti, evitando i severi editti emanati contro di essi.
