Antica e nobile famiglia, detta Vavassori o, in Slovenia, Valvasor, originaria di Telgate, la quale, già proprietaria di feudo con castello che successivamente passò ai conti Marenzi, non solo acquistò notorietà per il ruolo legato alla denominazione "valvassore", termine di onore e di importanza in gergo feudale, e per il vescovo monsignor Defendente, ma anche per un nipote di questi, Giovan Battista e i suoi discendenti che portarono con sommo onore il nome della loro casata all'estero, specialmente in Slovenia. Il primo V. di Telgate a portare il cognome "Valvasor" in Carnia ed in Slovenia fu Giovan Battista, il quale seguì la strada già apertagli dello zio monsignor Defendente, facendo parte di quella schiera di gente specializzata ed attiva che si era recata in Slovenia a dare man forte per apprestare le difese contro la minaccia dei Turchi.
