Una delle famiglia consolari, dette di primo cerchio, di cui si ha notizia, spesso col cognome Del Vecchio, nei primi documenti del secolo XII, che viene ricordata anche da Dante tra le più illustri di Firenze. Aveva casa con loggia e torre sulla piazza che da lei prese il nome: due diavoletti, fusi dal Giambologna, posti per ornamento sull'angolo della casa per reggere a guisa di bracci le bandiere del Duca della Luna, una delle potenze festeggianti in Firenze, dettero alla località il nome di Canto de' diavoli. I V. figurano con quattro dei loro nel Ruolo dell'Arbia; furono chiamati 25 volte al Priorato dal 1371 al 1504, una al Gonfalonierato di giustizia, nel 1387; tre senatori dettero al Principato. Ebbero cavalieri di giustizia nell'Ordine di Malta, tra i quali Raimondino, di Filippo, morto per ferite a Candia nel 1669; e furono ascritti al Patriziato fiorentino, con decreto del 14
