Famiglia originaria delle Fosse Papiriane, di antica e nobile tradizione, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La cognominizzazione è anteriore al XVI secolo e deriva dal toponimo omonimo in provincia di Lucca. Uno dei riferimenti più antichi di questo cognome si trova nella bibliografia "Opere di Pietro Giordani", stampata in Milano nel 1857 , dove si menziona un fatto di sangue avvenuto nel gennaio 1531 in cui un Bernardino vendicò l'uccisione di suo fratello Tommaso mettendo a fuoco le case dei parenti dell'assassino. I nomi dei Vecoli sono ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti, dai quale appare che erano di condizione agiata e nobile. Nel 1569 in Venezia un Roberto, compositore lucchese, mise in cartellone "La Canzonetta Napoletana a tre, quattro e cinque voci"; nel 1602 un Pietro, anche lui compositore musicale, portò
