Alguns autores genealógicos dizem que Velez e Avilez constistuem uma só família originária de Espanha, cujo solar é a vila de Avilês nas Astúrias, enquanto outros o dizem patronímico de Vela. O apelido Velez, assim como o de Avilez, difundiu-se no Alentejo, onde primeiro se fixou esta família se bem que o houvesse também em Tãnger. É natural que a afirmação dos linhagistas esteja certa, porque tanto os Velezes como os Avilezes trazem em Portugal as mesmas armas que são diversas das que usam os Avilezes das Astúrias.
