Antica ed illustre famiglia maltese, detta Vellari o Varrios, ove si distinse per le cariche primarie, ripetutamente occupate, a partir dal 1420. Fu portata in Sicilia, e precisamente in Terranova, da un Giuseppe , progenitore di quel Giovanni, cavaliere di san Giacomo della Spada, maestro razionale, morto il 16 gennaro 1674, di che fa fede una lapide sepolcrale adorna dello stemma gentilizio esistente nella chiesa della Magione di Palermo. Ne vennero altri personaggi distinti per cariche e nobili alleanze. Tra questi, citiamo: il sacerdote Arcangelo che, con privilegio dato a 15 maggio 1788, ottenne concessione del titolo di barone di Schifazzo e Daino; un Ottavio, colonnello del real esercito, decorato della medaglia del costante attaccamento 1818, aiutante di camera di rè Ferdinando I e presidente della Redenzione dei cattivi, il quale dal matrimonio di Giuseppa La Grua ed Alaimo si ebbe Ottavio già guardia d'onore, ed altri figli.
