Originaria di Semifonte, questa antica ed illustre casata, fu portata a Firenze da un Pietro, di Berto, detto il Vellutini, il quale vi ebbe ricchi traffici di lana. Buonaccorso, suo figlio, intervenne alla battaglia di Montaperti nel 1260, e alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1296 lasciò alla sua casa la reputazione di essere fra le più ricche d'Italia. Lippo, di Buonaccorso, fu il primo priore della sua casa, che dal 1283 al 1519 conseguì per 29 volte questa dignità, e per quattro quella suprema del gonfalonierato di giustizia. Piero, di Gherardino, fu governatore di Arezzo nel 1337, poi fu spedito oratore a Lucca nel 1342; Donato, di Michele, nel 1380 fu mandato a Napoli per rallegrarsi col Re della conquista di quel regno; Tommaso, di Piero, si portò a Tunisi per iniziare con quel sovrano trattative commerciali coi Fiorentini.
