Illustre famiglia milanese, che ha memorie sin dal sec. XII con una ininterrotta genealogia che scende da quell'epoca sino ai giorni nostri. Ebbe estesi possessi specialmente in Varenna e pure sul Lago di Como, possessi che si mantennero sino alla fine del sec. XVIII. Diede uomini illustri, fra i quali: Guglielmo, seniore, che nel 1238 fu condottiero delle milizie milanesi contro Federico II; Lantelmo, suo figlio, già pretore nella Repubblica milanese nel 1266, e che fu ambasciatore per concretare la lega lombarda contro il predetto imperatore Federico; Luigi, che fu uno dei sindaci di provvisione nel 1403; Matteo, sacerdote, che nel 1486 istituì un giuspatronato nella famiglia con sepolcro gentilizio e cappella nella chiesa di S. Giorgio in Varenna; Luca che fu notaro e padre di Giovan Antonio, pure notaro e marito della nobile Elisabetta Serponti; Galeazzo, del predetto Giovan Antonio, anch'esso notaro e marito della nob. Ginevra Serponti;
