Antica ed assai nobile famiglia genovese, tra le più presenti nel panorama politico del medioevo genovese, impegnata nella politica cittadina nel primo periodo della repubblica e protagonista delle lotte tra fazioni che funestarono la città sul finire del XII secolo e che la videro opporsi alla famiglia Grillo. Diversi esponenti della famiglia ricoprirono importanti incarichi nel governo della Repubblica di Genova tra il XII e il XIII secolo. Fin dal secolo decimo secondo molte erano le relazioni commerciali tra la Repubblica di Genova ed il Regno di Sicilia. I Vento furono tra i più attivi nella gestione di questi scambi commerciali. Al tempo di Re Federico II, un Riccardo Vento si trasferì proprio in Sicilia ove, secondo quanto riferisce il Mugnos, per i suoi meriti militari ebbe da Pietro II di Sicilia la castellania di Monte San Giuliano ed ivi stabilì la propria famiglia.
