Fin dal 1154 erano ottimati, e come tali avevano il diritto di presenziare alle sentenze proferite allora per il Pontefice in Bologna. Assunti due volte al consolato nel secolo XII, continuarono nel susseguente ad aver molta parte nel maneggio della cosa pubblica, chiamati tredici volte a reggere altre città. Furono condomini di Montemaggiore, di Vedreto, di Guardafossa, di Sitifonte, di Montecuccolo fino al 1280, e tennero per qualche tempo Mirandola ed altri castelli nel Modenese, trasferiti a loro dai Pico, co'quali sembra avessero vincoli di parentela. Furono infine de'più grandi possessori di servi, poichè ne ebbero 218. Furono di parte geremea e presero parte alle lotte fratricide di quell'epoca nefasta. Nel XIV secolo si diedero alla milizia, e sussistettero oscuremente fino al XVIII, in cui si spensero nella persona di Camilla P. maritata a Francesco Verardini, il cui figlio Sebastiano ne raccolse l'eredità ed aggiunse al proprio il loro cognome.
