Antica e assai nobile casata calabrese, originaria di Rende, in provincia di Cosenza, di chiara e avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Originariamente conosciuta come Virgili, la famiglia mutò cognome nell'attuale Vercillo durante un breve soggiorno in terra siciliana. Dal matrimonio tra Giovan Pietro Vercillo e Imperatrice de Merasco, nel gennaio 1530, derivano le cinque linee della famiglia, tra cui quella che, nella prima metà del secolo decimo ottavo, assunse il titolo di barone di S. Vincenzo, apportando qualche modifica allo stemma. Arma antica della famiglia: "d'azzurro, alla fascia d'oro accompagnata in capo da tre stelle a sei punte male ordinate, ed in punta da un giglio, il tutto d'oro". Arma del ramo baronale: "troncato da una fascia d'oro: nel 1° d'azzurro, alla cometa fiancheggiata da due stelle a sette punte, d'oro; nel 2° di rosso, ad un giglio d'oro.
