Famiglia romagnola, di chiara ed antica nobiltà, detta Ercolano, Ercolani e, più anticamente, Hercolani, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Il capostipite di tal casato, può esser rinvenuto in quell'Andrea, di Bagnacavallo, il quale ebbe due figli: Giovanni e Nicolò. Proprio quest'ultimo, nel 1449, fu creato cittadino bolognese e, insieme col fratello e coi figli Antonio, Bartolomeo ed Ercolano, passò ad abitare in Bologna, restando nelle native sedi il figlio Bitino, che così contiuò la famiglia bagnacavallese. Sante, discendente da Bitino, fu fatto cittadino di Bologna nel 1553; ma nel 1561 ritornò a Bagnacavallo, per la successione di Ercolano, di Giovanni Maria, ucciso quell'anno da Ercole, del cavalier Pietro, e sposò Elisabetta Teli, da cui ebbe Paolo, deceduto nel 1630, che s'ammogliò con Isabella Malpeli. A un altro Paolo, di Giuseppe, e a suo fratello Cesare, abate, Benedetto XIV il 7 febbraio 1744 elargì il titolo di
