Famiglia palermitana, del secolo XIV e che si vuole di origine spagnuola e poi passata a Napoli in Sicilia sin dal 1381 e stabilitasi in Palermo con un Francesco. L'imperatore Carlo IV con diploma 30 dicembre 1724 creò i duchi di Craco e re Ferdinando III con R. Assenso 27 ottobre 1780 trasferì il titolo di marchese già imposto sul feudo di Comignano in Terra di Lavoro su quello omonimo nell'Abruzzo Ultra. Con D.M. del dicembre 1875, Fortunato fu riconosciuto nei titoli di duca di Craco e marchese di Comignano trasmissibile ai discendenti in linea e con ordine di primogenitura e colla prerogativa del sesso, quale discendente da Francesco, ultimo intestatario dei predetti feudi. Detto Fortunato (n. 11 maggio 1833, deced. 3 luglio 1928 e marito di Marianna Atanasia) fu sindaco di Palermo, direttore generale del Banco di Sicilia, decorato di medaglia d'oro
