Famiglia di antica e nobile tradizione, originaria del territorio di Roma e propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La cognominizzazione è anteriore al V secolo e dovrebbe derivare dal nome arcaico di mestiere vergaio o vergaro, termine anticamente utilizzato per indicare il capo pastore, cioè colui che con la verga guidava le pecore, mestiere probabilmente svolto dal capostipite. Nella bibliografia "Inscriptiones Romanae infimi aevi Romae exstantes" stampata in Roma nel 1760 è riportata una iscrizione della chiesa di S. Anna in Burgo del 449 in cui è menzionato un Gioanni VergariZ. Successivamente i nomi dei Vergari sono ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti, dai quale appare che erano di condizione agiata e nobile. Un Vitruccio, pittore molto apprezzato, dipinse nel 1520 la vergine del Soccorso nella chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. Nella
