Famiglia assai antica ed illustre delle cui origini non vi sono notizie certe. La cognominizzazione è anteriore al XIV e dovrebbe essere toponimo della zona del monte della Vernia ove si trova un santuario famoso per essere il luogo in cui San Francesco d'Assisi ricevette le stigmate il 17 settembre 1224, ed un castello, oggi detti della Verna, da cui proveniva, probabilmente, il capostipite. Ne abbiamo un esempio nel XIII secolo, nella bibliografia "Fioretti di S. Francesco", stampata in Verona nel 1821, si riporta che frate Giovanni, religioso e presbitero italiano, frate francescano predicatore, beato , appartenente all'Ordine dei Frati Minori di San Francesco d'Assisi, evangelizzatore, confessore (1259-1322), si faceva chiamare della Vernia, al giorno d'oggi è detto Vernia. I nomi dei Vernia sono ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti in Emilia,Toscana , Lombardia, Veneto e
