L'Orsini asserisce essere questa una famiglia distinta dall'altre, ed originata dalla Cornelia, che sempre usò questo cognome di Merula, ed il primo, che lo portò fu quel L. Cornelia o Merula, che fu console di Roma, nel 561, come si nota nel Codice di Giuliano, il quale per prima Sacerdote di Giove, chiamato Flamendile, come riferisce il Tarcagnola; ed in questi tempi pure viveva la Casa Decima con riguardevole posto nella Repubblica Romana; ed in Assisi, godè questa il Magistrato del Seiuvirato, il qual offizio non si coferiva, se non a' propri, e nativi Assisani. Se questa famiglia abbia origine dalla Cornelia, o sia distinta, poco importa al mio intento, che è di mostrarla Toscana, o Assisana, di cui me ne fanno piena fede molti marmi, che si leggono nella Città d'Assisi, ed in particolare quello, che si conserva nel Giardino del Signor Vignati d'Assisi, che è del seguente tenore.
