La più antica ed illustre famiglia nobile di Capodistria, detta un tempo Guerci e poi Verzi o Verzì, il cui cognome trovasi già nei documenti del XII e XIII secolo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa. Signori di S. Giovanni della Cornetta dal 1106, che Francesco ottenne in feudo dal Patriarca d'Aquileia Uldarico I, sino alla fine del secolo XIX; Signori delle decime di Pominiano, Antignano e Costabona già nel 1211; più tardi ebbero la metà di quelle di Loparo e terreni a Valmorasa, Laura, Sabavia e S. Ubaldo. Dal 1340 ca. ebbero le decime di Gemme e la signoria di Gradina, dal 1463. Ebbero anche Puzzole e Plagnave. Nobili di Capodistria, Conti palatini del S.R.I., con la facoltà di creare notai (diploma dell'imperatore Federico III, 7 marzo 1457).
