Famiglia riconosciuta nella sua nobiltà fin dall'anno 1586, feudataria di S. Mauro del Cilento, di cui ebbe l'ultima intestazione il 5 novembre 1802 con Francesco, per averne fatto acquisto con Regio Assenso da Tommaso ed altri Piccirilli succeduti, questi, a Giovanna Spada, marchesa di S. Giovanni a Frosolone, nel Molise. Gli Spada vennero in possesso della terra di S. Mauro per acquisto fattone, nel 1722 della famiglia Gagliani, che l'1 ottobre 1687 vi aveva ottenuto il titolo di marchese. Del suddetto Francesco, presidente della Regia Camera della Sommaria, fu figliuolo Nicola (n. 15 luglio 1791), padre alla sua volta di un secondo Francesco (n. 20 settembre 1832), che dalla sua consorte Laura Caracciolo di Capriglia ebbe un secondo Nicola, n. 26 agosto 1864, iscritto col suo genitore col titolo di nobile e col predicato di S. Mauro nell'Elenco Ufficiale della Nobiltà Italiana. Lo stesso predicato trovasi pure attribuito alla
