Alcuni storici vogliono che i membri di cotanta illustre casata, siano un ramo della storica casata dei Capponi e, sostengono che abbiano preso il cognome da un Vettorini, figlio di Alemanno Capponi. Diedero parecchi gonfalonieri, priori ed ambasciatori alla Repubblica Fiorentina e a partire dal 1210 si trovano citati col cognome Vettorini. Celebre, fra gli altri individui di questa famiglia, fu un Andrea, che nel 1382 fu ammesso nella Magistratura e nel 1385 fu uno dei dieci incaricati dell'impresa militare, che doveva compiersi contro Urbino; nel 1388 fu inviato a Siena, indi Montepulciano, nel 1393, per ristabilirvi l'ordine; fu console nel 1399; inviato a Pistoia nel 1400 fu ricevuto con grandi onori. Il ramo di Firenze si estinse nella linea maschile nel 1835; quello che si trasferì a Roma godette gli onori del Campidoglio fino dal 1419, con un Nereo, di Andrea Vettorini, essendo senatore di Roma.
