Ancient and very noble family of Southern Italy, originating however from Spain, of clear and ancestral virtue, spread over the centuries in various European regions. The first vestiges left by the family are found in Catalonia in the 12th century. And in fact legend has it that the first passage in Italy took place through a Catalan knight in the retinue of Ramón Berenguer III. In Italy the family is mainly known as Viano but the Viani and Viana forms are also attested. We can identify numerous lines, all resident in Piedmont. The oldest, now extinct, flourished in Asti. The most conspicuous, and still flourishing, had its cradle in that of Rivarolo and was able to boast the title of Counts of Ovrano.
