Antigua y muy noble familia del sur de Italia, pero originaria de España, de clara y ancestral virtud, difundida a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones europeas. Los primeros vestigios que dejó la familia se encuentran en Cataluña en el siglo XII. Y de hecho cuenta la leyenda que el primer paso por Italia se produjo a través de un caballero catalán del séquito de Ramón Berenguer III. En Italia, la familia se conoce principalmente como Viano, pero también están atestiguadas las formas Viani y Viana. Podemos identificar numerosas líneas, todas residentes en Piedmont. Las más antiguas, ya extinguidas, florecieron en Asti. Los más conspicuos, y todavía florecientes, tuvieron su cuna en la de Rivarolo y pudieron ostentar el título de Condes de Ovrano. Alessio Viano, notario, es el primero de quien tenemos ciertos datos genealógicos. Murió el 19 de diciembre de 1680, luego de haber tenido confirmación
