Ancienne et très noble famille du sud de l'Italie, originaire cependant d'Espagne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions européennes. Les premiers vestiges laissés par la famille se trouvent en Catalogne au XIIe siècle. Et en fait, la légende raconte que le premier passage en Italie a eu lieu par un chevalier catalan dans la suite de Ramón Berenguer III. En Italie, la famille est principalement connue sous le nom de Viano mais les formes Viani et Viana sont également attestées. On peut identifier de nombreuses lignées, toutes résidentes du Piémont. La plus ancienne, aujourd'hui disparue, a prospéré à Asti. Le plus remarquable, et toujours florissant, a eu son berceau dans celui de Rivarolo et a pu se vanter du titre de comtes d'Ovrano.
