Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Meridione d'Italia, oriunda però dalla Spagna, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. Le prime vestigia lasciate dal casato si rinvengono in Catalogna nel XII secolo. Ed infatti leggenda vuole che il primo passaggio in Italia sia avvenuto tramite un cavaliere catalano al seguito di Ramón Berenguer III. In Italia la famiglia è conosciuta principalmente come Viano ma sono attestate anche le forme Viani e Viana. Possiamo identificare numerose linee, tutte residenti in Piemonte. Quella più antica, oggi estinta, fiorì in Asti. La più cospicua, e tutt'ora fiorente, ebbe culla in quel di Rivarolo e si poté fregiare del titolo di conti di Ovrano. Alessio Viano, notaio, è il primo di cui abbiamo dati genealogici certi. Egli morì il 19 dicembre 1680, dopo aver avuto conferma dell'avita nobiltà, con Patenti del 4 agosto 1664. Suo primogenito fu
