Familia antigua en el patriciado de la ciudad de Salerno del Seggio di Portava, que algunos autores quieren haber venido al Reino con los normandos, otros con los suevos. Los recuerdos más antiguos se encuentran en Venosa; por lo cual, en la antigüedad también se llamaba "de Venusio"; y así se llamaba Roberto, verdugo imperial de Venosa, en 1197. Giacomo, caballero y chambelán de la reina Giovanna I, en 1362 obtuvo de Americo Sanseverino, un gran concursante del reino, las enemistades de Monteforte, el rey Monticelli San Pietro; y trajo a su familia a Salerno. Quivi distinguió a esta familia en dos ramas, una de las cuales se extinguió en la familia Correale, noble en Sanseverino.
