Famiglia antica nel patriziato della città di Salerno del Seggio di Portava, che alcuni autori vogliono sia venuta nel Regno coi Normanni, altri con gli Svevi. Le più antiche memorie di essa si trovano in Venosa; per cui, in antico era detta anche "de Venusio"; e così era chiamato Roberto, imperiale giustiziere di Venosa, nel 1197. Giacomo, cavaliere e ciambellano della regina Giovanna I, nel 1362 ottenne da Americo Sanseverino, gran contestabile del regno, i feudi di Monteforte, Monticelli re San Pietro; e portò la sua famiglia in Salerno. Quivi si distinse tale famiglia in due rami, uno dei quali si estinse nella famiglia Correale, nobile in Sanseverino. Ricevuta, per giustizia, nel S.M. Ordine di Malta, dal 1623, in persona del cav. Gennaro di Salerno; e nel 1642, come quarto della famiglia de Griso (Archivio di Stato, Napoli vol. II, Priorato di Capua); nel 1668 con fra Fabrizio Maria; ed
