La famiglia Vignarola è assai antica e nobile, originaria di Ferrara, era detta anticamente dè Prosperi che stabilita in toscana prese il nome della contrada omonima dove abitava. Fu ammessa alle magistrature fino dai primi tempi dell'istituzione del governo popolare, cui dette due gonfalonieri e 20 priori tra il 1291 ed il 1523. Al tempo dell'assedio fiorirono Giuliano capitano della rocca di Cortona quando fu presa dall'Oranges e vi fu fatto prigione, e Lorenzo, il quale dopo aver combattuto strenuamente per la patria, fuggì dopo il termine dell'assedio e si unì ai fuorusciti, ma li tradì rivelando le loro trame a Cosimo I che lo fece senatore. I due fratelli Giacinto e Lorenzo-Antonio erano figli di Giacinto di messer Lorenzo. Il primo, era provveditore della dogana di Livorno dove morì nel 1724, ed il secondo, era canonico della metropolitana e spedalingo di S. Matteo, da lui instituito suo erede mancò
