Famiglia genovese oriunda dalla Francia assai antica e nobile, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Originari della Bretagna, annoverano personaggi illustri fin dal XIII secolo. Un Giovanni, crociato nel 1248, è menzionato nelle "Chartes latines de 1191 à 1249 relatives aux croisés, provenant du cabinet Courtois"; un Goffredo fu arciere in un torneo del 1356. Nel XV secolo la famiglia si imparentò con i de Bodègat con un Rolando di Rolando. La famiglia è menzionata nel dizionario Storico Blasonico ed in altri testi araldici da cui riportiamo "Antica e nobile famiglia genovese". Molte sono le famiglie che hanno stipite certo nel XII secolo; altre non meno antiche lo hanno nel XIII secolo, perché si trovano bensì memorie anteriori, ma la dimora in paese straniero, e sopratutto gli incendi, avendo distrutto molti antichi protocolli, ci hanno tolte le prove, e con ciò sciolto l'anello delle loro generazioni; altre
