Família de Espanha, cujo apelido originário é Villenés, de que passou um ramo a Portugal, ignorando-se a época. Parece que no nosso país modificaram o apelido ou por confusão com Filhana, ou, talvez, o que sucedeu com outras famílias, para aparentarem maior nobreza, viso os Vilhenas serem de procedência de reis e com categoria social muito mais elevada. Pertencem aos Vilhanas, como parece, os Pereira Coutinhos de V., de Penedono, que, no entanto, continuaram a usar as armas da família Villanés. Talvez outros Vilhenas do sul do Tejo tenham a mesma origem.
