Familia italiana antigua y muy noble, originaria de Cava de 'Tirreni, que se extendió primero a Amalfi y luego a Toscana y Emilia Romagna y que ya en 1208 obtuvo la investidura del feudo de Ajello, cerca de Castel San Giorgio. En cualquier caso, los recuerdos más antiguos de la familia parecen derivar de Suiza y, más precisamente, de Ginebra, donde tienen sus recuerdos de 932, como se informa en un manuscrito del monasterio de los padres de Liguorini en Deliceto (FG).
