Lignée italienne ancienne et très noble, de vertu claire et ancestrale, présente dans de nombreuses régions de par ses nombreuses et illustres branches. Les références les plus anciennes et les plus pertinentes sur le plan héraldique se trouvent en Toscane, d'où elle s'est ensuite étendue au royaume de Naples, à la Lombardie, au Piémont, etc. Par souci d'exhaustivité, il faut expliquer ici que les souvenirs les plus anciens de la famille semblent en réalité provenir de Genève, en Suisse, où il y en a des traces depuis 932, comme le rapporte un manuscrit du monastère des pères Liguorini à Deliceto.
