Ignorasi l'origine dei V. tortonesi coevi degli omonimo V. di Genova, Voghera, Pavia, Milano, Vercelli di cui non è dato stabilire eventuali vincoli di consanguineità o affinità quasi certamente inesistenti. Risiedevano in Tortona sin dal XIII secolo poiché è noto che un Rufino Villanus, consigliere, il 12 e 17 marzo 1218 partecipava alla stipulazione degli accordi tra il comune di Tortona e quello di Genova giurandone l'osservanza; credendario nel 1241, il 7 agosto delibera pure in merito agli accordi che Tortona stringe con il Pontecurone; nel 1242 possedeva beni in località detta "Scacabreta"; a quattro delegati, tra i quali Arlotus Villanus, il 27 febbraio 1231 è affidato l'incarico di definire i confini tra le isole del Comune e quelle del monastero di S.Marziano sullo Scrivia; Guglielmo figlio del predetto Arlotus, defunto, il 25 marzo 1242 vende a nome dei fratelli Lanfranchino, Ruffinetto ed Enrichetto beni in Scacabreta all'abate di S,Marziano;
