Sulla destra della Scrivia e sui primi rilievi appennini che s'allungano verso il Tortonese, il luogo di Villa (ora Villavernia) nel XII secolo faceva parte del Comitato di Tortona città da cui dista poche miglia. Per il vescovo lo amministravano dei visdomini, visconti, che assunsero poi il nome della signoria di cui erano investiti. I Villaricca parteciparono con le casate più illustri e potenti de tortonese alla costituzione nel 1122 del "Comune Signorile di Tortona" epoca in cui assunsero a notorietà; di essi però non si ha più alcuna memoria sino al secolo successivo nel quale, il Guasco c'informa, i Villaricca erano pure consignori di Pozzolo Formigaro. Dai cartari rileviamo che Rufino Villaricca ed altre persone il 9 aprile 1204 testimoniano a favore del monastero di S.Marziano, in merito a beni in Calvenzana; varie persone tra le quali Azzone Villaricca, nel febbraio 1209 cedono al Capitolo tortonese crediti in atto
