La famiglia è indubbiamente una delle più antiche di Lombardia. Moltissimi sono gli individui che portano quel nome e che si trovano in documenti prima del Mille. La genealogia stessa della famiglia, che più tardi doveva unire al proprio un altro nome glorioso di schiatta meridionale, ha le sue radici sicure in tempi assai remoti, precisamente verso la metà del secolo XI. Umberto da Vimercate viveva infatti in Milano attorno al 1050 e suo figlio Teudaldo appare in una donazione fatta alla chiesa di S. Fedele nel giugno 1095, indi nel 1104, con un figlio, pure di nome Teudaldo, e con altro Alcherio, figlio di Obizzone, forse fratello di Uberto, in una donazione di beni in Vimercate ai canonici di quella Pieve; infine in un documento del 1147 quale padre di Alcherio, che fu valoroso condottiero di truppe milanesi, a capo delle quali si battè strenuamente a a Cassa d'Adda
