A família é sem dúvida uma das mais antigas da Lombardia. Muitos são os indivíduos que levam esse nome e são encontrados em documentos antes do ano 1000. A genealogia da própria família, que mais tarde teve que combinar outro nome glorioso de schiat do sul com o seu, tem suas raízes em tempos muito remotos, precisamente em meados do século XI. Umberto da Vimercate viveu em Milão por volta de 1050 e seu filho Teudaldo aparece em uma doação feita à igreja de S. Fedele em junho de 1095, depois em 1104, com um filho também chamado Teudaldo e com outro Alcherio, filho de Obizzone , talvez irmão de Uberto, em doação de mercadorias em Vimercate aos cânones daquela paróquia; finalmente, em um documento datado de 1147, como pai de Alcherio, que era um valente líder das tropas milanesas, cuja cabeça ele lutou vigorosamente em Cassa d'Adda em 1158,
