Antica famiglia siciliana, la quale godette nobiltà in Trapani ed in Messina, sin dal XV secolo, e che fu insignita del titolo di barone di Moschitta, del quale ultimo investito fu Domenico, nel 1791. La famiglia è iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Ufficiale Italiano del 1922 col titolo di barone di Moschitta, in persona dei discendenti di Domenico. Altro ramo. Famiglia originaria dal castello omonimo, dette alla patria un gonfaloniere nella persona di Lippo nel 1301. Ser Piero di ser Guido di ser Michele, bisavo del celebre Leonardo, conseguì la cittadinanza fiorentina nel 1381, quando fu squittinato al priorato. Da Antonio, suo figlio, nacque un altro Piero, il quale esercitò il notariato e fu cancelliere della Signoria nel 1484, e da questo Leonardo pittore, scultore, architetto, matematico, fisico, idraulico, meccanico, musico e poeta celebratissimo, il quale morì in Francia fra le braccia del Re Francesco I. Pierino, nipote di Leonardo, fu anch'esso
