Linhagem muito antiga, chamada Vercillo ou Vircillo, de origem calabresa, que, segundo ilustres genealogistas, teria suas raízes em uma família antiga existente no mundo romano e que apareceu no Bruzio durante as lutas contra Aníbal. O historiador Tito Livio, de fato, conta como certo Vercelius se tornou famoso naquele período que, rebelando-se contra os romanos, queria seguir o cartaginês. Mas isso, então, foi capturado pelos romanos e enforcado em um local de Rende, ainda hoje chamado de "ponta do verciddri".
