Antica ed assai nobile famiglia sarda, di chiara ed avita virtù, conosciuta come Virdis, Virdi o Virde, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le prime tracce relative a questa cognominizzazione sono antichissime. Tra i firmatari della Pace di Eleonora, nel 1388, figurano tra gli altri: Andrea Virde, notaio in Oristano; Francesco Virde, amministratore di giustizia in Silanus; Juliano Virde, sindaco in Burgos; Petro Virde, amministratore di giustizia in Saccargia etc. Proprietari terrieri, i Virdes continuano nei secoli successivi a figurare in testi ed atti notarili che ne denotano l'agiatezza sociale ed economica. Lo storico Giovanni Francesco Fara nel suo "De Rebus Sardois IV" cita un Antonio Virde quale canonico di Ampurias e fiorente nel 1463. Sempre nella stessa opera, al capitolo "Carolus Caesar Hispaniarum et Sardiniae Rex", scorgiamo un Petrus Virde, insignito del cavalierato e della cintura militare da Carlo V imperatore.
