Credeva io, che Francese senza dubbio fosse la Casa di Besceglia, e che dalla Signoria di quella Cittá, posta in Terra di Bari, si fosse cognominata. Percioché Guglielmo cognominato Visceglia, fu Capitan Generale delle genti di Ré Carlo I in Toscana alla venuta di Ré Corradino, con l'esercito del quale venuto a battaglia sotto Ponte a Valle rimase rotto, e valorosamente combattendo, in man de nemici prigione. Ma avendo poi ritrovato, che Stefano di Biscaglia fú uno di quarantasette Baresi, che l'anno 1087 si trovarono alla gloriosa, santa impresa della Traslatione del corpo di S. Nicoló il Magno, Vescovo di Mira nella Licea; a Bari in Puglia; m'induco a credere, che piú tosto da lui, che da Goglielmo fu detto, questa Casa derivi, della quale non veggo mentione alcuna fino a tempi di Ré Carlo I sotto il cui Regno vivono Marino, Basilio, Nicoló, e quella Sibilla, Visceglia, la quale
