Antichissima famiglia, le cui prime generazioni rimontano al sec. XII e che, con una non infondata ipotesi, si volle riallacciare ai San Vitalei di Parma. Si suddivise, essa, in tre linee: quella dei Vitalei, conti di Paglières; quella nobilitata nel 1598, e nella linea detta di Ceva San Vitalei, per la signoria che aveva sia sui feudi di Ceva, sia sul fondo di S. Antonio del Baliggio, denominato San Vitalei. La seconda linea, la quale è estinta nei maschi, è stata rappresentata da Eulalia (n. La Morra, 29 luglio 1884) e da Maria (n. Torino, 21 dicembre 1888), figlie del nobile Pio e di Luisa Falletti di Rodello. La terza linea, la quale era stata infeudata di San Vitalei il 14 settembre 1751, e investita il 25 settembre successivo col titolo comitale in persona di Luigi Antonio, di Guido, ebbe termine con Carlo Federico, di Carlo Federico Vittorio, che morì
