Quest'illustre famiglia deriva da quella potentissima dei Vitelli di Città di Castello, e fu portata in Fuligno da un Vitellio, figlio di Angelo Vitelli nel 1302. Bucetto, suo figlio, fu nel 1342 eletto capitano della Custodia di Siena , da cui ottenne la nobile cittadinanza .Un Giacomo di Buccetto Vitelleschi, per salvarsi dalla persecuzione di Trincia Trinci signore di Fuligno, riparò nel 1359 in Corneto in cui fondò un ramo della sua famiglia, dalla quale sortì il celebre Cardinale Giovanni che fu Patriarca di Aquileja e di Alessandria, ed Arciv. di Firenze. Bartolomeo, di lui nepote, fu Vescovo di Montefiascone e Corneto, e quindi nel 1447 creato Cardinale dall'Antipapa Felice V.Oltre i summenzionati, la Casa Vitelleschi vanta un Manfredo che nel 1346 combattè a Roma, alla testa dei Cornetani in favore di Cola di Rienzo, e nell'anno seguente ebbe da questo il comando del Patrimonio di S. Pietro, e ricevette
