Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, passata nel Regno di Napoli al seguito dei re aragonesi e propagatasi successivamente anche oltreoceano. L'origine del cognome vuolsi essere molto antica e derivata dal nome preiberico "Bitiri", divenuto nel tempo primieramente Biteri ed infine Viteri. La chiara nobiltà di questa casata risulta confermata dalla sua presenza in alcune delle più pregevoli opere d'araldica europee, tra cui il "Repertorio de blasones de la comunidad hispánica - letras S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z" di Vicente de Cadenas y Vicent (29 Aprile 1915 – 21 Dicembre 2005), celebre "Cronista Rey de Armas" del Regno di Spagna. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa è originaria di Villaro, in Biscaglia. Proprietaria di molte terre, la famiglia ha dato i natali a numerosi cavalieri. Alcuni di questi si portarono, al seguito de re aragonesi, nel Regno di Napoli, dando così origine, tra il XV ed il XVIII secolo,
