Antica e nobile famiglia, dai trascorsi francesi, detta Vittozzi o Vitozzi, trapiantatasi in Orvieto, sin dai tempi di Carlo Magno, ove eresse la terra di Vasco, detta poi Basco, sulla quale ebbe dominio. Tal casato, inoltre, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Un Ugolino, signore di Vitozzo, fu eletto, nel 1080, console di Orvieto, ed altri molti, dopo di lui, vi sostennero le più alte cariche. Molti furono, poi, i Vittozzi che divennero prodi ed esperti capitani,magistrati e giuristi assai valenti. Un altro Ugolino, ad esempio, nel 1268 fu capo del Comune di Todi; Bindo, suo figlio, nel 1313, fu scelto come capitano generale della fazione ghibellina nell'impresa di Orvieto, e quindi fu esaltato alla dignità di vicario imperiale in Pisa. Un terzo ugolino fu fatto Vicario dell'Impero in Viterbo, da Ludovico il Bavaro. Bernardino, di Uguccione, vestì l'abito gerosolimitano
