Padre Idelfonso, nelle Delizie degli Eruditi Toscani, sostiene che questa famiglia è una diramazione dei famosi Salimbeni di Siena; il certo si è che questa famiglia si trova fino dai primi del trecento matricolata nell'arte della seta in Firenze e che a Firenze essa ha dato 5 gonfalonieri di giustizia, 34 priori, 4 senatori, oltre numerosissime altre cariche minori. Salvestro, fu nel 1365 castellano di Pistoia e nello stesso anno tornò in qualità di ambasciatore straordinario per pacificare l'agitazione prodotta dalle fazioni civili. Bartolommeo di Leonardo andò ambasciatore a Lucca, nel 1392, in occasione della guerra contro i Pisani, e a Milano, nel 1397, per trattare una lega con Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Onofrio di Leonardo venne eletto da Leone X nel 1518, arcivescovo di Pisa.
