Il Gamurrini, nell'Istoria genealogica delle famiglie nobili toscane e umbre, Firenze, 1671, fa risalire l'origine della famiglia ad un Lapo vissuto nel sec. XII; ma notizie sicure di essi non si hanno che dai primi del secolo XIV. Dal 1306 al 1416 la famiglia conta diciasette priori e tre gonfalonieri di giustizia, tra i quali si annoverano uomini, che ebbero notevole importanza nella vita pubblica del comune di Firenze. Ricordiamo: Tommaso, di Bernardo che, nel 1384, essendo capitano di parte Guelfa, fu deputato con altri cittadini a recarsi presso Carlo I d'Angiò per ottenere in dono, baratto o compra la città di Arezzo; Giovanni, di Luigi, uno dei Dieci di Balia nel 1414. Sembra che l'avere assunto una condotta di opposizione alla nascente potenza Medicea li abbia tenuti lontani dalle cariche dalla metà del sec.XV. Si ripresero però sotto il granducato mediceo ed ebbero due senatori, nonchè l'ascrizione per giustizia
