Parece que algunos, que esta noble familia puede descender de un Rolandino, conocido como Volta da Montevia, de quien tenemos memoria en el Archivo en 1157, cuando los del castillo se entregaron a Bolognesi, otros parecen provenir del lugar Volta en la llanura del Boloñesa, y por haber tomado su apellido, y el del primero, que llegó a Bolonia de esta familia era un Albertino de otro apellido alrededor de los años 1320, como descuidado, luego fueron llamados por el Volta, pero en cualquier caso o bien, no hay duda durante mucho tiempo aquí, ser uno de los principales en la ciudad en haber tenido hombres reportados, disfrutar de feudos, haber sido miembro del Consejo y poseer el rango senatorial; su arma es un castillo de plata, en un campo rojo, con la cabeza del escudo de plata, en el que se agregó el águila imperial por privilegio.
