Ancient and noble German family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. According to what has been handed down, this noble house belongs to the nobility of Lower Saxony and originally was divided into six branches. There has been a bourgeois line since the 18th century. This family belonged to the ancient nobility of "Uradel", a term coined only in modern times, in reference to noble families whose ancestral lineage can be traced back to times before the late Middle Ages. It contrasts with "Briefadel" (letter "letter of nobility"), or titles created by the monarch with patent letters, a fashion that, influenced by French practice, was introduced in Germany under the emperor Charles IV (r. 1346–1378 ). Quarterly, 1.° and 4.° or, a demi double-headed eagle per pale, sable; 2.° and 3.°, azure, a crescent surmounted by a star of six points toward the fess point, or; over all on an inescutcheon gules, a lion crowned argent.
